Sound problem

I'm currently looking a PC that has lost it's sound and it's got me scratching my head a bit.

The PC is a NEC Powermate VL5 with onboard ALC650.

I've installed the lastest chipset and sound drivers and everything looks fine in device manager.

However, if I go into Sound and Audio Devices in control panel, it states that no audio device is installed.

Strange since it let me install the drivers.

Any pointers?

You can install drivers for stuff that isn't there/not detected. You might of course not be able to use it.

Are you sure that the onboard sound device works? I.e. is it functioning?

I'm not sure.. because it says that the no device is present?

i have had jobs where onboard sound just fails best bet might be to just put a cheap pci sound card in

. but should they show in device manager and as working?
