sound proofing a room with egg box type foam questions

Hiya, planning on sound proofing a room/shed type thing, I can get my hands on huge sheets of egg box type foam for nothing and I was just wondering, firstly does it actually do anything to deaden the sound coming in and going out? and secondly whats the best way to stick it to a wall/surface, I was thinking carpet tape?

just a smooth wooden surface, Im not actually trying to sound proof it that was probably the wrong wording, just to reduce sound level going in and out of the room the primary reason also being that I ahve access to a **** load of big egg foam sheets

so egg foam isnt worth doing then? like I said its only because i have a pretty much unlimited suppy
