Hi guys,

Really need some advice as regards sound proofing my rig.

Been sharing my man cave with a noisy jet engine for around 18months when I decided on the Corsair Carbide 500R I went for looks rather than noise levels and the huge 240mm fan and vented sides looked cool

It really is horrible the noise it pumps out especially 30mins into a gaming session at times it over bares my headset.

Its time for a change more looking to sound proofing and will gladly lose some levels of performance in the process.

The case has to go I just don't think it can be saved its just too open and im looking after some research at the Fractal Design Define R4 Case has great reviews.

Would people agree with this choice?

Also can anybody recommend further sound proofing mods?

running an amd 8320 and a ati290x both have corsair enclosed water coolers installed (h80/h30 or similar)

Hi,

The R4 is nice but has been replaced with the R5 recently.

There are other similar cases such as the Antec P100 and P280.

-------------------------------------------

You could try a fan controller or volt modding the fans from 12v to 7v and thus reduce the speed of rotation.

Maybe even try speedfan, a program that can set fan curves.

What motherboard do you have? in fact whats the full specs? maybe something is just naturally loud.

Don't mind an R5 tbh if it comes to it have they improved? to R4?

990FX SABERTOOTH
AMD 8320
290X R9 ATI GFX
16GIG VENGEANCE
256SSD
3TB DRIVE
HIPER 880W TYPRER PSU

So you have one of those adapter things on the 290X to make a AIO fit yeah?

The R5 is newer and more modernised than the R4.

Try and isolate what is make the most noise.

You can unplug fans one at a time and even the CPU+GFX card fans briefly (a quick unplug and back in will be ok) and see what makes the biggest difference.

Yea tried that the stock fans supplied with the corsair coolers are only stock/basic fans but I think its more of a combination of the many fans in tandem

At first the title of the thread made think you wanted to soundproof an R4. I wondered what type of insane hardware you were running to need to do such a thing :D lol.

I dont know anything about the R5, but if its improved over the R4 then it must be one hell of a case.

It has a few small improvements, but nothing major. The noise-dampening panels on the fan mounts are easier to remove, SSDs can be put behind the motherboard tray without removing the motherboard, that kind of thing. The main thing that bothers me about my R4 is that my hard drive makes the bottom fan filter rattle. I think the R5 uses two smaller ones instead of one big one, so maybe it fixes that too.

its looking like the R5 then as r4 seem abit scares now, just got to convince the OH why I need a new one. baring in mind shes been complaining about the washing machine and iron being faulty for over a year :D

i replaced the 2 stock fans on my h100 and its a big difference, would imagine the other corsair coolers are the same.

aside from the corsair fans, and the 240mm on the case how many other fans do you have running ?

do you get any major noise from the psu ?

have you thought about the sound proofing kits and fitting it to the corsair ?, i've got the r4 and while the sound proofing does help a little bit theres not a massive difference when i take off a side panel.

Many thanks for the input going to install a decibel app on my iphone tonight and do some tests.

Hoping I can get some clear readings on it tonight

Think you was spot on, the noise does seem to be coming from the liquid cpu cooler most of it its shocking. this is what I originally purchased a while back.
