sound recorder

Can anyone recommend a good sound recorder? I'm not too clued up about this sort of stuff so any help would be appreciated.

I want to record some sounds for a couple of songs I'm making - I'm trying to gather some everyday sounds - anything from road traffic to birds singing etc.

I'll probably then start editing it on the PC etc

Anyone point me in the right direction?

Depends how much you're willing to spend. I have a friend that uses a Boss Micro BR, small and very good quality. The Yamaha Pocketrak W24 looks good also.
Or you could just get a small portable digital dictaphone?
