Hey,

Will keep this brief, my girlfriend is having her birthday next week and i want to buy her a piece of hardware so she can record her electro acoustic guitar onto her mac, software isnt an issue as i understand she can do it with garage band... but i have no idea what hardware i need to do this. Can anyone give me any ideas or names of hardware that i need to be looking for! Cheers!

There are lots of firewire devices you can use - have a look at gak.co.uk since they have a large range of stuff (I don't believe OCUK is a competitor here since it doesn't sell such hardware).

You'll probably want something which can take 1/4" jacks. I have a Miglia Harmony Audio but I think they've been discontinued. Shame because it's damn good.

You can try the Jamlab by M-Audio which is simply a 1/4 TS jack to USB. If she wants to do more with her recordings then i would say go for MobilePre USB which has stereo outputs, as well as 48v phantom power and enough inputs to get some good recording going on.

At the end of the day it depends on how seriously you wish to take it, and what kind of material you wish to produce. If you cant afford the MobilePre, then there is always the FastTrack USB which is similar but has less inputs and cannot provide phantom power for condenser microphones.

cheers for the replies, been really useful. Off up to denmark street tomorrow to go buy something! Wish me luck with it all, you guys have pointed me in the right direction and i think i know what i am gonna go for now, will let you know what i get!
