sound reduction

hey all,

so after lovingly gifting my brother the old computer he is kicking up a fuss about the noise it makes in his computer room.
The case sits on the desk next to the monitor and apprently the fans are way too noisy when gaming.

so was thinking that maybe some new fans would make the poor thing a little more barable. something like this:

2x sp120 for the h100i

and 3x f12 pro for the case
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-037-AR

are these fans a fiarly good cost effective way to reduce sound in the case?

while looking into how to make the thing quieter, noticed that there are some people using foam in the case to try and reduce noise. is it worth the effort and does it make much difference?

pc current spec:
xclio nighthawk tower case, 3 stock fans. 2 front 1 rear. has a vented window too
i5 3570 @ 4.8ghz
h100i, 2 stock fans
MSI gtx 770 twinforzer 2gb, 2 fans but fairly quiet
250gb ssd
2 x 1tb hdd

If the above doesn't work:

I know the AFs are out of stock so you could purchase a single pack or two but stick to the quiet series from the reviews I have read.

You could use foam but it would cover fan holes and potentially increase heat and therefore noise.

He would also need a generic set of foam as I don't think they make a set for his particuar case. (Happy to be proved wrong here.)

I do think it is a case (intentional pun) of replacing the stock fans with something quieter.

it's running in 'quiet mode' most of the time. did him a custom fan map that ramps up with heat but not till it gets quite warm. but these fans seem to start making too much noise anywhere above 1400rpm.

oh so the sp120 with any decent pressure and flow are going to be just as noisy as the stock h100i fans then?
the 'quiet edition' ones have really poor pressure and flow, will it be enough without high rpm?

well as i'm corsair adverse got him a pair of akasa apaches which have some amazing stats. they are also much more quiet than the corsair sp120s plus they are much cheaper. win win!

will report back once they turn up and have tested them.

Just get a cheap fan controller. Job done.

running the fans at a speed isn't the issue, running them at a speed that doesn't sound like a jet turbine in the case and still cooling things is the issue.
the software is fine as a controller but the stock fans are just too loud for my bro's taste.

if it was my rig i'd stick it under the table and ignore it.

so the update. got the fans (with free shipping from OC :D ) and fitted them yesterday. kinda.

turns out the stock fans in the case and the stock fan controller are some weird system that is not compatible with normal fans. they have a 2 pin design, ok so just chop some plugs and all good? no, the controller doesn't change the voltage on the 2 pins (tested it), it must change a signal, as the voltage does not change at all with the turning of the speed dials but the old fans do indeed slow or speed up using these controls.

going to try and stick the new 2x 3 pin fans on the mobo connectors and see if that works. the rear fan is no issue as it's 4 pin anyway. it should all work like that.

But just to keep things a little more interesting, the Arctic fans are much thicker than normal 25mm fans. didn't even think to look at the depth of a fan while ordering. this means the front door of the case won't close. as the Arctic f12 fans only have a mounting on the exhaust side, this means i'm going to have to invent some way of mounting them a little deeper into the chassis. not 100% sure how that is going to be done yet but it looks like the motor part of the fan will mount without it's shroud so going to try that first.
watch this space...

as for the 2 akasa pwm fans on the h100i, very impressed with them. super quiet (as are the arctic fans) and no problems with mountings or weird plugs etc. just what the h100 needed. the temps are a little lower than before at idle (though the room is 2*c cooler today) and under load they are fine at around 60-65*c accross all 4 cores with the h100i staying around 30.2*c after 20 mins of 100% load.

hope this helps other people choosing fans.
