Sound seems to have stopped working

Hi

In my Ubuntu Feisty Fawn installation my sound has stopped working - it worked fine before

i get the little drumming sound at the login screen (so i know the speakers are working) but my mp3 and movies don't have any sound

how do i troubleshoot this problem?

Have you had updates recently? Was the kernel upgraded do you know? Do you get any error messages at all, and if so what are they?

Anyway, It *might* be sound driver updates I guess (wild guess.)

Have a look in the files:

/var/log/syslog
/var/log/messages

particularly for stuff relating to sound. (esp. anything with the acronym "ALSA" in it.)

addly enough today the sound worked - bizarre

anyway i still looked back through the logs as you suggested from when i booted a few days ago - couldn't see anything, though there was pages and pages of the stuff
