Sound settings for gaming?

Was just wondering what headsets and sound cards you people have, and how you have them set up?

I have an X-fi Xtreme Gamer with a Creative Fatl1ty gaming headset.

Since the days of CoD4 came out, I've always set up my sound like the following;

Windows 7 is set to 5.1
Creative Drivers is set to Headphones and CMSS-3D is set to "On".
Then in game I always set it as 5.1.

This usually gives me a good feeling of surround sound.

I was wondering if anyone did similar or has a better way?

I just use the Creative console and set it to 5.1 through a Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 set up

CMSS-3D is on as default

I have Sennheiser HD555 headphones, and I just use onboard sound, haven't really set anything up. I'm probably missing out.
