Sound Setup Queries

I've recently built a new Pc running Vista 64bit on a Gigabyte DS3R motherboard. I've plugged the front panel audio lead from the Lian Li PC7 case into the motherboard (with a slight extension) With a view to using the front panel for my headset (late night gaming and Ventrillo), but plugging in the jack no longer switches off the rear outputs to the speakers, and it doesn't always work.

I do have an X-Fi platinum with drive bay which i could install, but with all the recent problems with the drivers I'm feeling that the onboard sound might be a safer option for now (oh yes i have 4gb of ram) . I'm actually quite impressed with the onboard HD sound, but it does have a habit of not working now and again, and i find it a bit troublesome to configure.

Can anyone suggest my best course of action
