Sound System

You sit at the front of the car, so fitting two big heavy speakers on a wobbly parcel shelf behind you frankly is a waste of time. Upgrade the head unit and front speakers with something decent and it'll be more than good enough.

As has been mentioned above, general order for upgrade ICE:
Head Unit
Front Speakers
Sub & Amp (Also amplify front speakers at same time)
Dynamat the crap out of the thing!

Never EVER stick 6x9s in a car, you'll regret it instantly, they look gash and they generally sound even worse.

I can't believe that people still recommend 6x9s like they are the done thing. I do understand that they have their place in systems, but in most cases that place is not on a wafer thin parcel shelf above a sub like 99.9% of people seem to put them.

I haven't been in a single car with 6x9 fitted that sounded even remotely acceptable . It drags the sound stage back and generally sounds like ****. And not **** in the way that only an audiophile would notice either. It just sounds crap (but the bass kicks in nice and hard, and that's all that matters, right?).

£50 wont really get you much at all.

Remember you'll need an adapter to make the aftermarket HU fit and the same if you fit other speakers.

Look on ebay at second hand Alpine, Pioneer etc units - Thats probably your best bet as most HU's dont hold any value.

Personally first thing I change is the stereo, as someone said the improved amplification from stock helps things a lot and makes even standard speakers sound better in most cases.

6x9s have their place, if setup properly they can bring something decent to the table, but never have them with a sub in the back/on the parcel shelf.

I had a set years ago in one of those 'stealth shelf' wooden parcel shelves and they were good imho. Provided a bit of bass as a bit of fill, didn't drag the sound stage back at all as they were setup correctly :)

These mtx coustic components sound very good, dont need amping so with a decent head unit (pioneer/alpine for around £80) will be enough then at a later date pickup a decentish active sub for around £100. sorted.
