Hi, I've been lurking here for a while now as you can see lol and normally find solutions to my problems by just searching the forums but I thought id actually pick your guys brains this time :)

Now I have a couple of issues. When playing some games, the new COD for example it will just randomly freeze for a split second and then the framerate drops then goes back to normal.

I run it at 4K (as I do all my games) and my CPU is at 50-60% usage and my GPU usage is 80-90% which is a bit unusual tbh but I'm using 7.4GB of my 8GB GPU Memory could that cause issues on that specific game?

Also On COD it says it's using 85% of my RAM so I didn't know if that was the problem and knew it was time to upgrade that anyway so I've got 16GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM coming on Tuesday to put in.

I get freezes on other games as well though and they use 100% GPU and half as much GPU memory and Ram.

I'm getting a bit of crackling on through the speakers as well, I notice it more on Project cars as that's just a constant drone of an engine and on the music on the menus. I looked into it and got Latencymon and the Nvida driver (nvlddmkm.sys) was the highest reported but I hooked up another monitor and ran it on that and saw no spikes at all when gaming and the sound was crackling.

I've updated all my drivers and turned off things like Speedstep EIST, and the onboard sound in the BIOS as some suggest and uninstalled the HDMI drivers for Nvidia as I use a sound card but its made no difference.

I have got a few old parts and don't know if any of them are causing issues. Here's my specs,

I5 3570K OC'ed 4.2GHZ
MSI Z68 G45
Zotac GTX 1070 Amp
Crucial 8GB Ram
Samsung 840 120gb SSD for Windows
Kingson HyperX 240gb SSD for games
Soundblaster Recon3D
Windows 10

Any ideas what my problems could be and anything I can try?

Thanks

I keep hearing that single GPU 4K is still not here for gaming, even with 1080Ti, so I am not sure if you pushing your 1070 to the limits?

See how more RAM works out for you because I know a game like Just Cause 3 will eat your RAM alive...with 8GB of RAM it's pretty much unplayable. I have GTX 1080 but only 8GB RAM and this games stutters like crazy at times, to the point where I would not enjoy it and uninstall.

does dropping the resolution stop all the problems?

whats your FPS during these games?

It might just be a case of it being a bit ambitious to run these games at 4k on your hardware, and you need to either drop resolution, or optimise / lower video settings.

If you feel that's not the case, then a reinstall of windows never did any harm when it comes to fault finding.

Have you tried to disable the HDMI Audio drivers for Nvidia instead of uninstalling as it will just reinstall? But surely at 4k you would need more than 8gb of ram?

I probably am pushing it far tbh but other than the odd stutter it seems to handle them all well. I'm gonna have to test more games out on it to see if all of them do it or if it's just certain games.

I know COD and Project Cars 2 do, Wildlands did as well when i was playing that from what i remember.

I was getting over 60FPS on COD with mostly ultra settings so capped it at 60 in RTSS because I saw FPS spikes could cause it so stutter. Other games Vary quite a bit, I get 60FPS in Project Cars 2, I'm getting 40-50FPS in Watch Dogs 2 but I've only put that on tweak the graphics I haven't actually got into the game yet to see if it stutters.

Ill lower the resolution on them all, give them a test, see what happens and get back to you.

I did that first tbh and it made no difference so I thought removing it would be better lol, I noticed once it did reinstall but since I disabled then deleted It i don't think it has.

When i watched a TV show last night it was happening as well, so I've found out that's not just game related.

I did on the Xbox 1 but stopped when I upgraded my PC and started gaming on that instead and didn't bother getting it on the PC.

So I've done a bit of testing at 1920x1080 and 2560x1600, low and ultra settings on a few games and I'm still getting the odd freezes.

Oh it forgot to add, Windows did reinstall the HDMI audio driver lol but it's come back as disabled as I left it.

At this point, I'd be doing a fresh install of windows. I know it seams like a pain, but it really doesn't take that long and rules out all software issues.

I don't mind doing a fresh install, it's just getting it back to how I want it is what's time-consuming like the settings for each program.

I guess if I clone the whole drive like I usually do I can access all the configuration files and transfer them back over to there relevant folders.

Any tips on things I should be doing after a fresh install, like what to turn on/off and stuff?

Just an update and the problem seems to be fixed.

I installed my new Ram and had a play around with some power settings and both issues have gone :)

sometimes it' good to set gpu power management in nvidia to max performance. also I had some game crash because of nvidia experience being installed. so I no longer install it
