Sound through a dvi to hdmi socket?

Hi there,

I got my hands on a dvi-hdmi cable and plugged it in to my daughters pc thinking i can get rid of her rubbish speakers. I get a picture but no sound from her tv/monitor. the motherboard is an asus p5q-vm and the gfx card is a gigabyte 4850. Is ther a way to make this work or have I wasted £2?

Interesting why mine wont do it. The cable has all the DVI pins in it but AMD high definition output device says it is not plugged in, in my playback devices. I can live without it but just need to buy speakers. Anyway the graphics are far better now so not a total waste as was formerly on vga.

I tried a dvi-hdmi dongle(i got this with my nvidia 470 so might not work with ati) & it never worked. It says I need a separate audio cable when I plug it in. Going to get some speakers tomorrow.

Had a look round in my loft & found an ATI dongle, working great now thanks all!
