Sound via GPU Question

I was wondering if graphics cards these days can output HD audio formats to an AV receiver?

They'll send audio via HDMI but I've no idea how many channels this supports or if theres a difference between cards.

Just to add, I'd like to have my PC as a HTPC. Only thing I need is a graphics card which can hopefully send surround audio signal to my AV receiver!

as above they only do it over hdmi, maybe get a chape sound card?

Connecting VIA HDMI to my receiver isn't a problem, I also plan on buying a graphics card for gaming!

Are there any sound cards that can output official HD audio formats?
