Hello,

I was wondering if anybody could send some advice my way. This is the first time I have posted in this forum. I usually lurk around the PC section being an avid PC gamer.
I enjoy listening to music but do not own any real hi-end sound systems or headphones. Mainly used HD555 Senheisser Headphones.

Currently on the market for a Soundbar, having just purchased a ‘Samsung UE50KU6000 50 Inch UHD HDR Smart LED TV’ I imagine a full blown 5.1 set up with separates would be the best way to go. But due to living in a flat within a converted old Edwardian style house the soundproofing that exists is probably the dust between the floorboards. So I need to consider my neighbour below. Something with the ability to adjust the Subwoofer settings would cater for that and common sense with the volume. So I don’t want that to be the main factor for choosing a SB (ie looking at a none powerful system). I Predominantly looking for good sound and good connectivity, I have been hearing that Optical (TOSLINK) can suffer from desync? So was hoping for HDMI or HDMI with ARC as much as I know my TV supports it.

I popped into a Good quality department store in Chelsea on Saturday and had a look around some of the Stuff on Demo. Initially went with the mindset of spending around £200 and wanting to hear the BOSE solo5 TV Soundbar. On listening to it was a little underwhelmed. My next port of call was the Cambridge Audio TVB2, I actually worked on the packaging for this product when the company was going through a rebrand. So I was keen to hear it having seen it on display. Has anybody got any experience with it? I have looked at numerous reviews and it seems to be received relatively well. Through the TV the sound was ok but when I switched to Bluetooth and listened to a track from Spotify on my phone it sounded Crisp and really well pronounced bass (Leonard Cohen – Nevermind & then The Angry River – S.I. Istwa, Father John Misty). It has good Connectivity and I was happy with it but was concerned with the lack of customizable options, think there where 4 in total preset EQ settings.

Then some bloke behind was demoing Orbitsound A7 with Starwars The force awakens, he really cranked it up and it blew me away it sounded so good but the price tag was pretty hefty at £500. So I asked the guy if there was anything around £200 my budget at the time. He showed me the Orbitsound M9LX But having listened I wasn’t as impressed by the sound on it and preferred the CA TVB2. There was another model up, the M9 but they were sold out pending a restock. I listened to that it offered a more balanced sound in direct comparison the bass was more controlled as the rep described, more of a balanced sound. But still preferred the CA TVB2. So I was left thinking I would purchase the TVB2 but I have been thinking over the weekend. I’m leaning towards spending a little more for a better sound and customizable options with the EQ settings. But I’m now back to which model should I buy, does anybody have any better recommendations for £300-500 mark?

I would really appreciate the input from somebody who has more of an understanding of Audio visual set-ups. Also are the above products compatible with the TV, this was something I just presumed it would be fine. It will be used with A Sky HD Box and the TV.

Thanks for reading

B

I always recommend Yamaha YSP soundbars.

Yamaha make brilliant AVR's and their soundbars (well the YSP range anyway) are really good. However they aren't cheap for the decent ones. Try and get a YSP 2500/2600 minimum.

second hand on avforums is your best bet. I got a YSP1600 for £160ish. It's very good but now I want more. also hd555's can be modded into 595's by removing a bit of foam, so easy a 5 year old could do it (look up on youtube). HD595's are easily in the top 5/10 best gaming headphones ever made. so your headphones for gaming anyway are "rolls royce" spec. for music you would want HD650's.

Richersounds have the Yamaha YSP-2500 on sale for £399 at the moment.

The problem with going the second hand route on avforums is that good soundbars like the YSP ones hardly ever go up for sale and when they do are snapped up within a few hours of posting. You could wait months for one to appear and miss out unless you spot the thread right away.

Thanks for the advice. Will try and get a demo of a yamaha either at Richer sounds or John lewis. I'm not really one for buying secondhand goods. I prefer peace of mind buying from a store. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with buying from an audio forum as they will no doubt take good of their kit.

RE headphones, I doubt I can trust myself modding anything..I am happy with them as they are :). I hear a lot about the 650's but think that luxury will have to wait. I must say the HD555 have lasted me an age, I got some new earcups for them and they look spankers again, bar the slight cracking on the plastic where they hinge.

I bought a YSP 2700 recently and I love it, didn't think I would coming from traditional separates but really glad I made the move :)

Got a question about the YSP soundbars. Do I need a TV that supports ARC? I've got an older TV and no other AV kit currently apart from a Sky box. The bulk of my movie viewing is done via Plex on a Chromecast so does that mean I need ARC to go from the TV to the sound bar? Also have a PS4 so I suppose I could run Plex through that.

.

I got "Done" on that site with a dodgy amp once , 3 weeks later while trying to sort it out the guy got banned and that was the end of that .

Not sure about all YSPs, but the 2700 has three HDMI in ports and will pass through video. So all you'd need to do is connect your Sky box, chromecast, and PS4 to the soundbar and have a single HDMI cable to the TV.

^^That's how my YSP 2700 is setup (TiVo + Shield TV) video and sound are passed through when the 2700 is off/standby but when it's on the sound only comes out the 2700. This suits me better than ARC even though I could use it.
