I'm looking for a solution to this little 'problem': when watching films I'm finding that loud noises such as explosions, gunfire, music, etc can drown out dialogue, and seem to be changing the volume all the time.
Is this due to a surround sound signal being decoded for output to the TV's stereo speakers? Would this 'problem' be eliminated/minimised by connecting a soundbar/surround setup? If so, this brings me to my next 'problem'...:D

Films are streamed via Plex on pc to a Samsung F6320 running the Plex app. Is it simply a case of using the optical output on the TV and plugging it into whatever external speaker I decide upon? Does the TV simply send the original audio to another source? If so, this brings me onto my next 'problem'...

A 5.1 setup is basically unworkable - I'd love one, but space constraints and trailing wires will be a huge problem, so are there any suggestions for sounbars/bases, even a 2.1/3.1 system will suffice. Part of me dies inside when I say sound quality is not the primary requirement (I actually need a shower after typing that :(), it's really to sort out the volume issue. Oh, and it has to be reasonably cheap, £150 tops.
It's possible I can make it to Richer Sounds in Southampton if they have anything worth considering.

Thanks in advance!

very rarely does a tv's optical out output the original signal but a 2.0 one.

have you looked within the audio settings of your tv? that could be the issue.

£150 will get you a pretty decent second hand soundbar. i wouldn't touch brand new with that budget because they aren't that great.
