I suspect there is an easy solution but google doesnt respond with anything too relevant at first glance.

I acquired a cheap soundbar which I plugged in to the tv using hdmi arc. Straight out of the box the tv has picked it up and defaulted to it and the Sky Q remote allows me to adjust volume on it. However nothing is displayed on screen to indicate volume levels where previously there would have been for the internal tv volume. I havent done anything through the sky box to tell it that there is an external sound source - on my old sky box I had to put in a code and do some pass through thing - I forget now.

What do I need to do so that I get the on screen display? Sorry if this is a daft question, I'm tired and when i didnt get an instant answer i posted here!

It might not display because it doesn't work in the way you expect. Also, this isn't a SkyQ box issue.

How you do volume adjustment isn't the issue here. The Sky Q remote is Bluetooth, and so that's how it talks to the Q box. The Q box in turn talks to the TV via the HDMI connection using HDMI Control (CEC).TThe TV talks to the soundbar via HDMI Control.

With no soundbar attached, the TV is using its own internal speakers, and so the volume bar is displayed. But plugging in a soundbar bypasses the internal speakers; and it also bypasses the TV volume display.

This is a TV/soundbar/HDMI Control issue, and I suspect the TV is behaving exactly as designed.

Unless you have some TV menu to re-enable the volume display then my guess is that this is the default setting to have no sound level display when using an external sound system.

For any further help you'll have to tell us the make and model of TV.

Of course as always you are absolutely right! The TV settings are correct for an HDMI sound source etc. On reflection the last time I had a soundbar it did the exact same thing but it had a physical digital display on it so I could see the volume that way.

TV is a Philips 50PUS6704 Ambilight and the soundbar is a hundred pound thing that came free with it, Philips HTL1510B. I wouldnt normally even bother but since it was there anyway I thought I would stick it in as a stop-gap until I can get something more appropriate (Ive discussed what I ultimately want with you before I think!).

I suspect on reflection if you plug in a £100 soundbar (free or not) you get a £100 soundbar!!
