Soundbars?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a bit of advice/guidance on soundbars.

I currently use an Onkyo nr609 amp with some Boston acoustics soundware xs 5.1 - fairly cheapo speaker set when I got this setup 8 years ago. I have the ps4/switch/steam box and virgin media box connected via amp to the main TV ZT65B, so need at least the same number of connections.

Setup has been good and happy with it but with a house move coming up and the unit I keep everything in being quite large, I need to look at smaller options.

My partner hates the amp/sub so in the past I tried a few soundbars - some £700 odd highly rated Yamahas a few years back but was massively underwhelmed. I don't need the latest and greatest but something that could replace the above.

Has anyone else been in a similar position and found a good solution?

Thanks

Underwhelmed in what way? Lack of positional sound that a 5.1 speaker set provides that can never be replicated with a soundbar, or lack of bass if the soundbar didn't have a subwoofer included?

I'm certainly not the best person to ask when it comes to soundbars, but I always had the impression that £700 Yamaha soundbars were very good indeed. Having said that though, it does depend what about such soundbars disappointed you.

Actually, at the time I only had 2.1 setup.

It was everything, positional sound, general audio quality and clarity. It came with a sub but I have the bass low anyway (top floor flat)

I know I am not being very helpful as I can't give specific feedback and while I expected a sidegrade at best, it just sounded like a cheap pos.

This probably should have been posted in the home cinema and hi-fi section - sorry if any mods see this, can you move it please!

To be honest; if you felt that what some would say is one of the better soundbars did quite poorly compared to your 5.1 setup, then I'm really sure where you can go from there.

I know a soundbar can't compete with proper full sized 5.1 speakers, but I am somewhat surprised a £700 Yamaha did so poorly compared to what are small cube 5.1 speakers. I know they are good speakers, but still; physics. Such small speakers can only do so much.

Anyway; I agree that this would be best posted in the home cinema section though. Better chance of getting replies from those more knowledgeable about soundbars and what you should be looking at as an alternative to your 5.1 setup. Lucid in particular is very knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to home AV.
