Hi,

I've got the media cabinet in the link below, and now need to get some better speakers for the Samsung TV. Budget is ideally around £200 to £300, although that can flex a bit.

I don't really have the space for a full 5.1 system and don't want to run wires all over the place/under carpets etc, so I've been thinking about a soundbase/soundbar or a 2.1 system with speakers small enough to fit on the shelf in the media cabinet (ideally with a wireless sub, although wired would be fine too for the sub).

The trouble I have is... the media cabinet shelf is only about 75cm wide and most soundbars seem to be nearer 1 meter wide. The media cabinet shelf is moveable up and down a bit, so height is not really an issue.

As most soundbars seem too wide, I've therefore started looking at soundbases... but I don't want to sit the TV on top of it and would still want to put the soundbase on the shelf, but I'm wondering if it will sound very boomy/distorted being in the media cabinet (probably sat on the lower shelf) ?

Any advice appreciated. The models I've been looking at so far are...

Cambridge Audio TV2
Canton DM75
Denon DHT-T110
Bose Solo

Cheers.

I have the canton DM50 and I think that it's superb. Not cheap but fantastic build quality and sound.

The DM50 can output a lot of bass (I have mine turned down most of the time) and I would expect it to boom inside that cabinet, not least because the unit is deep and the rear bass ports look like they would be close to the rear of the unit.

Why do you not want to sit the TV on top of a soundbase? It would be sound better as it will reduce boom and the tweeters will be slightly closer to ear level.

nice cabinet btw.

Thanks gEd, I don't really like the look of the tv sat on top of a soundbase, and the media cabinet currently has nothing on either shelf (all dvd's / blurays are all ripped to a NAS elsewhere and streamed to the TV). Hence me wanting to put some speakers in the shelf area.

From your advice, I guess I should stop looking at soundbases then, and start looking at soundbars (max width 75cm) and/or 2.1 systems (with small front speakers) again. Anyone got any suggestions for the £200 to £300 mark?

You could always try one out and send it back (under distance selling act) if you didnt like the sound.
