Soundblaster Z Microphone Issue

So yesterday, happy with my wonderful new sound card, myself and a friend tried recording a video for youtube funs.
Unfortunately we had a lot of issues with microphone quality on the soundcard which prevented this. It turns out, using the Soundblaster Z is great for sound but not for microphone input... The problem was, the second I went in to a game there was a considerable amount of noise on the line, enough to make it impossible to hear anything in subsequent videos, and to make it very difficult for my friend to understand what I was saying.

We attempted to use 3 different microphones. The Soundblaster Z 'beam forming' microphone, my headset microphone, and a usb webcam. The webcam had no issues with static at all and worked fine but the quality on it was always pants so not worth using. The others both had the same issue.

After a lot of googling this appeared to be a well known problem, and someone suggested updated drivers from PAX which didnt help.

After much thought on the matter I have come to realise the issue could be its proximity to my graphics card, as the problem gets worse the longer I am in a game, especially a graphically intensive one, so its reasonable a graphics card related issue could be happening, like EMI.

I am however unable to text this until I get home in 8 hours time, but am wondering if other people have had similar issues and what their solutions were? Its annoying as I paid more for the SBZ specially because it had a microphone and EMI shield which I thought would protect it from this issue and give a better microphone quality then my headset!

I haven't got my Z installed at the moment, but when I had a Soundblaster Z in my Z87 build, I didn't have any noise issues. However, I put it in the bottom PCI-E x4 slot on my board rather than in the x1 slots directly above/below my graphics card.

Have you got the option to move it away from the GPU as a test? With the beam-forming microphone, I found that the quality was pretty good.

I've had my soundblaster Z in both PCI-E slots and have never had an issue with noise.

Are you using the noise reduction under "crystalvoice" out of interest? If I have it turned off I do get white noise being picked up, however the option being on completely removes it. I use 100% Mic volume with +10db of mic boost.

I do have a lower slot available to try this evening, it is sat directly above the gfx card currently because I didnt even consider things like noise when I plugged it in having never suffered from it before :/ Is it strange that it only affects the microphone not the speakers / headphones or is that expected?

We attempted that option and found it removed a portion of the static at the cost of a lot of voice clarity, but moving the card may fix that too

What graphics card is it? It could be a combination of a noisy card and close proximity to said electrical noise.

I didn't have much choice in moving mine down to a lower slot because the cooler on my old HD7950 blocked all the x1 slots!

Just had another play out of interest and I've found that if I turn crystal voice off I do have background static. Not sure how much of it is the fan's of my PC or EMI.

If I turn on noise reduction or acoustic echo cancellation they both have the same effect of removing the noise but I can't tell if the clarity of my voice is different.

The gfx card is EVGA GeForce GTX 970.
No idea if this is better or worse for noise!
Step 1 when I get home, look for some kind of loopback microphone app so I can hear what I am saying in almost realtime without having to record it!

I have the soundblaster Z and have never had issues with my microphone either. installed in top PCIe slot above my EVGA 980.

Also in terms of hearing yourself back there is a 'test' in the crystal voice section of the soundblaster control panel that should let you hear the microphone straight back into your headphones.
