Soundcard for 2.0 speakers?

Are 7.1 soundcards okay for a set of 2.0 speakers? I'm buying some studio grade monitors (Alesis M1 MK2).

Just not sure if to get a good soundcard, or an audio platform like this:

For something that high quality I'd reccomend something other than a standard pc soundcard. Possibly use a digital output with a DAC, AMP and whatever addaptor the speakers need.
