Basically can i use onboard sound with my X-Fi also installed?

Why do i want to do this?

Well basically i produce tracks of myself using the Audio Creation Mode on my X-Fi. I like all the control i have over the mic effects with echo etc. Ive tried several other soundcards including the newer AE5 card and nothing gives me the same features as the X-Fi

I also play fortnite with the kids and the wife daily but a Fortnite update back in may broke compatibility with the X-Fi. At first i thought it was a problem with Windows but testing proves the issue only occurs with Fortnite.

Sound in Windows and other apps / games it works fine.

So basically is it possible to enable the onboard sound and have Fortnite play its audio via the onboard? Id also plug in the front panel header into the onboard sound and use the headphones for Fortnite leaving the speakers plugged into X-Fi.

Would it be as simple as switching audio devices in Windows before launching fortnite and switching back to the X-Fi afterwards?

You should be able to just switch audio devices, yes.

I run a sound card and use my onboard audio to feed Sim hub software for transducers on my racing Sim. During setup, I had audio trying to play through the transducers and simply switched audio device so that I could get on with the transducer setup in sim hub.

In the end i managed to get a generic USB audio device online.

All i have to do is plug it in before launching the game and it becomes the default device and unplug it afterwards to return the X-Fi as the default device.

Yes you can have multiple I have

The one in the GPU (as part of the HDMI cable)
Integrated on the motherboard analogue/digital out
Dedicated pci-e soundcard
Usb dac/headphone amp
Sound out on the hdmi out on the motherboard backplate

Switching between them is possible but it's snot not simply having a switch box you have to go into windows sound output.

Many games allow you to select an audio output device. I have a Topping MX5 connected via USB and I can easily switch between it and my onboard sound.

Takes me back to the 90's: I had some Aureal sound card for its "3D sound effects", outputting to a second Sound Blaster card just for amplification to run some ridiculous headphones my Dad said were "very good".
