Soundproofing further?

Hi, I've got a Corsair Obsidian 550 case with only the stock fans in. I have a Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU cooler.

I must say I was hoping for it to be quieter. Might sound daft, but what can I hear? The fan noise or the airflow?

How much difference could I make to quieten further? Different fans? Soundproofing material. Just seems like the noise comes from the outlets which I don't know if it can be helped.

A fan controller to slow the fan speed should help.

One of the Lamptron or Scythe Kaze range seems to get a lot of good reviews.

Check to see if there is enough room behind the case door first though.

Can you setup your fans so motherboard automatically adjusts fan speed based on cpu temp?

I do on my and normally the fans are at 740rpm. Even at 100% on Prime fans are 100rpm below max and CPU is below 60c

Hmmmm.... Dunno. I have an Asus P8Z77 V MB. I'll have to look

Might be your psu has a loud fan.
The stock Corsair fans are not know as quiet.
Is the solid side panel attached?
Graphic cards can have annoying fan noise (even at idle on some models)

disconnect all the fans - and reboot with just one fan at a time o find what's making the most noise.

What CPU cooler do you have?
I wouldn't unplug GPU fan but can check others including CPU if you have a good size aftermarket cooler.

surely you can tell the difference between the sounds? Without a video I can't offer much help.

Are your case and cooler fans speed controlled?

For example mine are all PWM fans (7 in total) controlled by motherboard. In normal use they are all 730-780rpm then ramp up as CPU gets hotter to a peak CPU temp of 60c with fans at a maximum of 1160-1350rpm.

PSU is only noise most of the time. Only hear other when CPU load is above 40-50%.

Thanks for all your comments - I have been fiddling a bit with Fan Xpert 2 and have worked out that it is my Phanteks CPU fan that is the main noise culprit. This is the only fan that can't be controlled. With the other fans, there isn't an awful lot of difference between around 400- 1200rpm, the CPU cooler always overpowers noise wise.

I thought the Phanteks was meant to be whisper quiet, plus the Corsair Obsidian 550D case..... It makes what can only be described as a "fan noise"!!!!

Correct. The phanteks CPU cooler doesn't have the option of control in fan xpert. It's always running on full even when PC is idle and temps are in the 30's.

Should it be adjusting its speed according to CPU temps?

As far as I know Asus don't offer DC control of 3 pin fans, just 4 pin PWM fan control. Not quite sure why Asus would do this as still a lot of aftermarket CPU coolers just come with 3 pin fans.

What you need is one of those PWM adapters that Phanteks are offering for free for purchasers of the Phanteks cooler.

Which is discussed somewhat in this thread.. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18395167

I'm developing a circuit to convert 4 pins to 3 pins to allow control of standard fans through PWM in this thread.. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18421145

Thanks Tealc. I have contacted Phanteks aout this PWM adapter. Does this allow control of the CUP fan speed or is your special circuit required?

Cheers

Depending on what motherboard you have you can control the CPU fan/s with bios and software so fans change rpm based on CPU heat.

With my Gigabyte I use their ET6 software set 10% rpm @ 30c and 100% rpm @ 50c (ET6 50c is 60c core temp) Idle rpm is 650-800rpm @ 40c and 100% load is 1200rpm @ 59c. Fans range spec is 700-1300rpm

Phanteks is checking into a heat issue i experience when using 3x of their fans so I am presently using TY-140 fans on cooler.

Cheers for that. What heat issue were you experiencing? Dunno if it is making much difference but the centre of the fan feels pretty warm on the phanteks fans where as my case fans feel cool.

Middle fan will feel warmer because it is moving warm air from first radiator though it. ;)

Heat in the B772 getting hot to the touch at low rpm. Will keep posting in thread Tealc gave links to above.

Are your side and top vent panels in place / closed?
