Ok... so, my PC is running pretty damn quiet now... but still not quiet enough... Has everything running on low fan speeds and the only really noticable noise source is the PSU (Tagan 530W)... so I'm thinking that the next step to make it quieter would be to get some of that acoustic absorbtion stuff and put that in...

Would it make much difference?

I fitted my Antec sonata II with that and it makes a definate differance. Built my machine a couple of months back

Dual core P4 3.2
7800GT
Zalman 9500
A week ago i built my Uncle an almost identical machine but with a 7900.

The differance was amazing, his machine seems way louder. I would definatley recommend it :)

Be prepared for a small temp increase though as the matting acts as an insulator. Could put 5c on your cpu and gfx, but if you have good enough exhaust fans everything should be fine :)

I think the biggest diff is made from putting the matting on the case side that you normally remove to do anything inside your pc.

Go for it!

Most people I know who've used it say it makes no difference at all to noise and increases temperatures. Also, it's a nightmare to get off once it's on. Have a look in case central. :)

mount the PSU on rubber washers etc, or hoover the bugger !, is it the signle 120mm fan moduular? or the non modular dual 80mm?
mines the quietest aprt of my system

also make sure all of the fans are the same brand and model, sometimes mixxing fans can give you added noise
different fans have different tones, different tones can only make it worse !

buy a fan controler which can turn the fans OFF ( vantec nexxus springs to mind) experiment with which fans are really needed at which speeds

i know turnuing soem off and on on my brothers PC make no difference !

Cheapest option is to use old mouse mats.

I collected a few donations from our company's marketing department, the ones with a resin top and sponge back, and then cut them up to fit in the floor of the case with the sponge facing up. It really silenced the vibrations from my water cooling kit and is easily reversable.

Also cut them out as a template around your case fans and install them between the fan and case to reduce vibration transfer.

You could do the same for your PSU. Just like a dampening kit but with no cost involved, just a little elbow grease. :)
