Source Of Thermal Paste Re CPU Upgrade ?

Hi,

Would anyone please be able to advise me where I can get a syringe or sachet of thermal interface material to apply when swapping over a CPU?

Having never changed a CPU before its something i have never needed to buy.

Also, another rather nooby question, is it easy to remove a socket 1155 heatsink/fan to get to the CPU? The pictures I have seen look as though the heatsink pegs push and click through to the other side of the motherboard, are they easy to release.

Any advice most appreciated as I am definitely wobbling on this and thinking about paying one of the PC service shops to do it, replacing CPU's is unchartered territory for me, replacing memory or drives etc are OK but a CPU is wobbly time

you can get it from all pc components places. its around £2-£5 depending on quality. I have some here left over from a build. i could post it you if your not in a rush with the xmas post etc

It's to use with an i7 2500 CPU, does that need a certain level of quality TIM or is there a recommended make that upgraders/builders seem to prefer?

cpu cooler will come off fine, heres a demo off youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3k9Ube9BBs. just make sure you clean the top of cpu properly before you put new paste on. and there is also a guide on youtube to put the correct amount of paste on. i reckon the size of a grain of rice is the right amount as it spreads a lot

Thx for the video clip, it looks as though he rotates the 4 heads through 90/180 degrees to release them then lifts them up, unfortunately it was not that easy to see as the camera was wobbling about all over the place except focusing on the heatsink. I think I have the idea though, thx once again for the link.

the stock cooler on an 1155 needs turning anti-clockwise a quarter turn, then it should pull out. i have an intel stock cooler in my hands now, there are barbs which go through the motherboard which will release with a pinch on the end with pliers etc. all the pastes should be good. some brands more expensive but id go for the slightly dearer one for only a few pounds extra. atleat your'll have the peice of mind then.

Do I need to remove the motherboard from the PC case or can I release the stock cooler/fan with the motherboard in the case? Your reference to pinching the barbs with pliers has me thinking I need to get to the underside of the motherboard?

From a quick search it seems like Arctic Silver 5 is a reasonable option, could anyone please confirm this just to be sure I purchase the best quality for peace of mind?
