Just got my yearly bill through the post. How the hell can they charge these rates, and how do they calculate?
We have a small family of 3, any people to compair?

Water Supply Rateable Value charge £104.54
Water standing charge (wtf?) £29.54
Waste water ratable value charge £209.48
Wastewater standing charge (wtf??) £27.28
Surface water drainage £22.00 (pffft, our area gets flooded all the time)
Highway drainage £7.00

Total 399.84 for god dam water!

We going over to the 'ifs its yellow let it mello, if its brown flush it down' way of life!

I pay them £19 a month by direct debit for myself so that's £228. A family of 3 will use quite a bit more water so the bill isn't completely out of this world for a year of water.

If it's for a year I would have said that was about right.

If it's rateable value it doesn't matter have much water you use, it's a set charge.

If you are not on a water meter then it doesn’t matter about how many people live in the house, the bill is based on the council tax band the house is in plus othe charges.

Not on a meter, £250 a year for a one bedroom flat with 2 people here.

I'm with Thames water.

Unless you're on a water meter you're charged a flat rate, that does seem a little high, especially the wastewater charge, i think my bill was £130 for water supply and £120 for wastewater.

How they can say it costs twice as much to take away your water than supply it is a bit of a mystery to me?

If you live alone then look into getting a water meter, they used to fit them for free and they'll save you a lot of cash from my experience, mine went from £25 a Month to under £8 a Month for a 2 Bed Semi, if I'd got the meter installed a few weeks earlier I could have claimed cash back too from the previous year but just missed the deadline :(

As others have said, look at getting a meter. You can't really complain too much when you're charged for what you use (obviously the charge per cubic m varies between the different water companies, but it's the fairest way).

I worked for Anglian Water for a few years, and they had a policy that if you had a meter installed, you had a year to opt off it. Within that first year you'll get two meter readings, giving you a good idea of if it's worthwhile.

Oh, I live in Nottingham in a 2 bed terrace, my rates based water bill is £156 from Severn Trent Water. I'm not metered so I flush all the time. Sometimes twice even...

Having a meter is saving me a fortune :) 1 bed flat. £53 a year for water supply, forget how much for waste water, but same sort of amount. I'm pretty good with saving water, so low use + meter = good news.

We got a meter and the bill dropped from about £330 per year on a set rate to about £170 per year. That's 2 people in a 2 bed flat.

I feel sorry for you lot south of the border.
I pay £95pm for my council tax which incorporates water up here in Scotland. I can pee and flush my toilet 5 times whilst running a bath with the shower on and it doesn't cost me any extra. Also, i have had the same kettle i bought for £50 10 years ago and its still going strong.
I used to go done to Boston where my in laws where living and couldn't believe they had to purify the water before you could make a cup of tea!.
