Southport stabbings

Interesting thread on twitter right now, posted by @thales4c:

On #Southport, here's what's happening right now.

The Home Office crisis communications team (probably working with MI5) is currently instructing the police and local authorities to not say anything. Quasi-gag orders to the press preclude anything about the attacker getting out.

The goal is to control information about the suspect while info surfaces about casualties.
Why? Because like the Valdo Calocane case, the goal is to build a narrative that emphasises the story of the victims. This shifts the public's focus onto the vic, rather than the perp.

By having the news cycle and social media focus on sentimentality about the victims, they then can *quietly* release info about the perp on the side - such as their race and migration status.
This way mainstream public attention never quite falls onto the perp.

Instead, it will be treated as a "tragedy" with the perpetrator's next appearance or mention being through very simple press releases announcing court appearances and the like. The focus is always to misdirect the public from asking:

a) Who is this perp?
b) Why are they here?

Expect the coming 24-48 hours to show off agonised rolling coverage of the victims. Then expect vox pops and community leader interviews talking about how they will recover.
A piece covering the criminal will be released, but likely towards the end of this period as a side-note

The goal is intense misdirection to avoid a political flare-up during this 48-hour period.
This is the most dangerous period for the state from a "public order" and "community cohesion" perspective. And critically, people are emotionally open to arguments RE justice and borders.

I'm from Cardiff.

There's loads of Alis, I've known a few.
Exactly there must be millions of British born Ali’s in the UK or are we now (assuming he was born here) saying his parents (assuming they weren’t born here) shouldn’t have been allowed in just in case their unborn future child committed a heinous crime?

Far to much speculation going round, the facts will come in time but the twitter generation need instant answers.

Interesting thread on twitter right now, posted by @thales4c:

To be fair, the media shouldn't focus on the defendant, and any reporting should really focus on the victims and areas affected in my opinion.

If there's anything to learn from the US and their plague of school shootings, focusing on the killer - releasing his name, details, story message - normally results in more attacks, because it gives him a platform.

It creates an environment, where if you 'go out with a bang' your story will be published, and other people out there with the same intentions realise that they too - will be immortalised by the media, if they follow in his footsteps.

Tbh it’s not really surprising if the media are being careful with ID-ing when people are frothing in excitement, borderline relishing… the idea that it’s an ethnic minority / immigrant.

Why are we importing more problems when we already have so much already then?

He was born in Cardiff 17 years ago, we have no idea when his parents moved here. Are you going for the 'we never should have let anyone in' angle?
I honestly think some of you are going to be gutted if it turns out to be just some British national with mental health problems.

Of course they will, the race baiting on X today was absolutely ridiculous. There are posts on my town's Facebook page saying it was a Syrian refugee... with loads of people reacting and commenting on it saying they should have shot his boat.

though they seem to contort themselves to prevent offence to minorities/religiofacists.

In this case honesty is the only way -“managing” public perceptions is insulting. this act should enrage all communities in the UK

The official Merseyside Police website is good enough for me.

Twitter has everyone thinking he arrived on a boat last year

Hope he hangs either way.

And there we go, via GB NEWS

The 17year old moved to the UK with his parents from Rowanda when he was 6

Was NOT born here, and yet again this smacked of a cover up not giving the details out

Absolutely disgusting that anybody could think to harm a child, let alone kill one. :(

Meanwhile, let's all play a game and guess how long it takes the BBC to release the attacker's name...

‘Like a scene in a horror movie’

Two children were killed and nine others were stabbed on Monday when a hooded man launched a knife attack in a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

The attack began just before midday in Southport, Merseyside, as the children, some as young as six, were enjoying the workshop at the beginning of the school holidays.

Six of the wounded children remained in a critical condition on Monday night and were being treated at hospitals across the North West.

Two adults were present at the dance and yoga class and tried to intervene. They were also being treated for stab wounds and were said to be in a critical condition.

Merseyside Police confirmed that a 17-year-old boy, from the village of Banks, about five miles away from Southport, had been arrested and was being questioned on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons and is originally from Cardiff, moved to the Southport area with his Rwandan parents when he was aged six.

In a press conference, Chief Constable Serena Kennedy, of Merseyside Police, said that while the incident was not being treated as terror-related, colleagues from counter-terror policing had offered to assist with the investigation.

She said the motivation behind the attack remained unclear.

On Monday evening, the King sent a message of support to the families of the victims.

He said: “My wife and I have been profoundly shocked to hear of the utterly horrific incident in Southport today.

“We send our most heartfelt condolences, prayers and deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who have so tragically lost their lives, and to all those affected by this truly appalling attack.”

Ms Kennedy said that her officers arrived to find children subjected to a “ferocious attack”, adding: “We believe the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked.”

She went on: “As a mum and a nana, I can’t begin to imagine the pain and suffering that the families of the victims are going through at this time.”

Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, offered his condolences to the victims , saying that “the whole country is deeply shocked”.
Attack ‘like scene in a horror movie’

The Taylor Swift-themed workshop had been organised by Leanne Lucas, a local teacher, and was intended to coincide with the start of the school holidays.

About 25 children, aged between six and 11, signed up for the event, which was due to last two hours from 10am until midday.

Witnesses described how just after 11.45am, the attacker allegedly pulled up at the dance studio, which is situated in a small business centre behind a residential street, in a taxi and then got out without paying.

One witness claimed he had a black hooded top pulled up and was wearing a Covid-style face mask. He walked into the studio through the front door, which was unlocked for fire safety reasons.

People living close by described hearing shrieks and screams before blood-soaked children began running from the building.

Parents, hysterical with panic, dashed to the scene desperate to find their children.

One witness said she had seen a mother at the scene, adding: “She was screaming, ‘My daughter’s been stabbed.’ The woman was in hysterics.”

Colin Parry, owner of Masters Vehicle Body Repairs on Hart Street, called the police and said mothers were screaming as they arrived at the scene. He said: “It is like a scene from a horror movie.”

Mr Parry added: “It’s like something from America, not like sunny Southport.”

Within minutes, a massive emergency response was under way, with dozens of ambulances, police cars, fire engines and helicopters arriving at the scene.

Ryan Carney, who lives on Hart Street, said he rushed home from work to be with his mother after she saw the incident.

He said his mother had gone into the street after hearing screaming and crying, adding: “All she said was she saw members of, I don’t know, either police or ambulance, carrying out a few bodies of girls.

“They were in white, but covered in red, covered in blood. She said she could see the stab wounds in the backs of the children.”

A local parent, who did not wish to be named, said his daughter had been “traumatised” by the attack. He said: “My daughter was in it and she was traumatised. She ran away and she’s safe.”
Hospitals declare major incident

North West Ambulance Service said victims were taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Southport and Formby hospital.

Alder Hey declared a major incident and asked parents not to bring their children to the emergency department unless it was urgent.

Emily Spurrell, Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “To hear that innocent, defenceless children have been attacked during a Taylor Swift event at a dance school as they enjoyed the start of the school summer holidays is unthinkable and absolutely abhorrent.

“These young people had their whole lives ahead of them and it is hard to find the words to convey our deep sadness.

“Our region will be heartbroken that more young lives have been lost at the hands of violence and more have suffered serious injuries, and I share local people’s deep concern and anguish.”

Joanne Newman told BBC News: “I got a call from a very, very good friend of mine, I was in work completely oblivious to it and as soon as she told me I literally ran out of work.

“I don’t know how I managed to drive back to be fair - my priority was just my girls, my girls, my girls.

“I knew my eldest daughter was taking her to a friend’s house and I’m just so thankful to God that they’re safe.”

She continued: “Nobody can believe it, all the local mums have checked in with one another - I’m sure we’re all going to know somebody from that awful, that poor group. But the parents I checked in on, my girls and I just ran to the crowd because I just thought, you put your NHS head on don’t you?

“The mother that I was just consoling, just the look on her face because she knew something had happened to her child, it’s like ‘oh my gosh’, how do you even comprehend - there’s nothing you can do.”

“My brother’s been with her, he’s 13, he’s witnessed it. She’s gone in the house and made cups of coffee and stuff for the fire service and everything like that.

“She came out and there was a woman who was screaming, saying she can’t find her child.

The attack took place at the end Taylor Swift themed dance and yoga class at Hart Place at around 11:50 am.

Door for children’s dance class usually left unlocked, says staff member

A staff member at the Hart Space said the front door to the property was usually left unlocked as there was no other way out of the address in case of a fire.

She added: “We’ve just been told that the door was open downstairs but it’s always open because there’s no alternative exit from that room. There’s no fire door.

“Also we have to keep it open as the children want to go to the toilet constantly and it’s just outside the door – the toilets.

“It’s a lock with a key – you’d have to keep all the kids locked in with a key.”

“The Hart Space is the most lovely, lovely relaxing place. Usually, it’s for babies.

“It’s a holistic kind of thing – for yoga and all that type of thing. For babies and pregnant women.”

“Then we started hearing rumours that a man had started stabbing children. “It wasn’t long before the ambulances, police cars and fire engines arrived.

“It was a mum with her 10-year-old daughter who had been stabbed.

“I helped to get her back up to where the police cars and ambulances were.

“She didn’t look great but my focus was on getting her back up the street to get help.

“When I got back up the street there were a couple of kids on the floor being seen to by paramedics and, as I came back, more police cars were going down and more ambulances gradually started to arrive.”

”When I got there, there was a guy who was absolutely distraught, in a mess.

“He’d seen two children run out of The Hart Space, and he thought they had got hit by a car because the car was just full of blood at the side of the car.

“But it was actually that the children who had been stabbed had fallen into the car. It was apparently a guy with a black hooded top on.”
