so i did a fresh install yesterday, the first 'wave' of updates installed fine, then it was time for SP1...

every install attempt it keeps failing like this and has to redownload/reinstall only to fail again, i have already tried the 'Windows6.1-KB947821-v14-x64.msu' program that the Microsoft site suggests but all that does is install some hot-fix which does nothing :(

You have only installed updates and nothing else ?

hmmm weird , most of the time when I see this problem it is due to
some files being damaged somehow, either by , virus , disk error , improper shutdown etc

open a dos window in admin mode and type

sfc /scannow

see what you get back

only think i can think that i did different is that i installed the avast firewall (20 day trial version), would this have affected it at all?

I have reformatted again and installing all the updates again now (not at SP1 yet)

Download the network install exe ( should be 800mb or thereabouts )

Wouldn't be unheard of that service packs dont play nicely with windows update

DONE IT! but not without a final battle lol
dowloaded it, restarted to install, it installed but crashed on the 'shutting down' part, had to hit reset button then windows booted back up and started to 'configure' SP1 before showing the desktop but crashed at 32% so had to reset again, was given option of safe mode but I went for normal then it carried on to configure from 35% - 100% and booted up fine :D

I have downloaded that manual SP1 file for the next time i need to format :D
but by the time i need to do that again windows 8 will be out and ill be starting many more threads about that instead :D

too late now but you should have grabbed a windows 7 ISO image with sp1 already integrated. if you search the forums there are legit links to download it.
