For initial period right after the big bag the universe was too dense for light to travel through it. Therefore there is no light from this period. The very earliest light waves have become stretched out over time and are now the background radio waves you can see hear on an untuned TV or Radio.

That's my current understanding of things anyway based on my somewhat limited knowledge gained from obsessive watching of discovery/history channel etc and the few astro physics book I've read. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will be able to explain it a bit better.
