Guys,
1st post here...
I have just bought and built my new machine on as tight a budget as I could for the performance required for me to run an MCITP Training test rig. (Machine details at end)
Generally I am very pleased with the machine, however there is a small problem I have found with the combination of the GA-EX58-DS4 Motherboard, Titan Fenrir CPU Cooler and the OCZ Reaper memory:
With the CPU cooler fitted correctly (fan facing the memory banks), there is insufficient space in the 1st two DDR3 memory slots (DDR3_2 and DDR_1)!!
Gigabyte hasn't been able to recommend any coolers other than the standard stock Intel / Gigabyte ones they use during initial tests - which I have shy'd away from due to their limited Overclocking capabilities.
Titan suggested rotating the Cooler, but due to the proximity of the Blue (Northbridge) cooling pipes around the CPU this is not possible, because with the fan attached to the Fenrir Cooler, the cooling blocks are in the way....
I have therefore had to remove the CPU Cooler Fan in order to get the memory into DDR3_1 (DDR3_3 & DDR3_5), there is a gap of 23mm between the CPU cooler and 1st memory dimm, I have been looking for a 120mm square x 20mm thick fan that could be fitted in the gap (Yate Loon D12SM-12C).
But by adding the replacement fan would permanently prevent me from adding a further bank of Tri Channel Memory later.
Can anyone come up with any brain waves?
i.e. Alternative CPU Coolers
Can any other EX58-DS4 users comment on their cooler / memory arrangements ?
I think a Core i7 CPU with a CPU cooler but no fan is probably not a good idea long term?
Machine Spec:
Mobo: Gigabyte EX58-DS4
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 D0 2.66GHz
CPU Cooler: Titan TTC-NK85TZ Fenrir
Memory: 6GB OCZ DDR3 PC3-16000 2000MHz Reaper (9-9-9-30)
VGA: Gigabyte GeForce 8600GT Silent Zalman 256MB GDDR3
Disks: 4 x WD Caviar Black 500GB (WD5001AALS)
DVD: LG GH22LP20
Case: Antec 300
PSU: OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w Silent
Thanks,
Adrian
