You are wrong, but that's okay. You're young. Maybe. Play it again, and this time, like it. Also Freespace & Tachyon, though neither is anything like Homeworld. Tachyon is worth it to see space pirates steal the roof of the Sistine chapel, and to get the full impact of Freespace 2 play through the first one. Then you'll understand how scary it is to have the full shivan fleet come looking for their "scouting party".
Do Sins for the closest Homeworld-a-like, but if you're into branching out try GalCiv 2 & Master of Orion 3.
Nope, freelancer did suck. It combined the worst of all worlds. And mouse controls..le suck.
The multiplayer looked interesting but it was too exploitable from all accounts. Shame really :/
