Hi,

Running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit here on an Acer laptop.

The hard drive is split into two 40gb partitions and Vista is installed on the primary partition and space seems to be running short.

I currently have just 1gb of hard drive space left, and I really can't work out where it's going! It does seem to fluctuate, and sometimes I have as much as 4gb free, but usually it's under 2gb.

Is this usual for Vista? I regularly run things like crap cleaner, super anti spyware and have nod32 running all the time so I'm confident my system is clean.

I also clear out the temp internet files as well.

Has anyone got any tips for freeing up some space?

Just two spring to mind immediately. Read up on vssadmin command (there are a few threads about this so should be searchable on the forum) to reconfigure and reduce the amount of System Restore space vista uses. Also move your pagefile to your other partition?

Run disk cleanup, click the more options tab and press cleanup system restore (keeps the latest one) and shadow copies. That'll probably get a few gig.

Thanks guys

Nanobot: I shall certainly look into that option in the future
modo77: For a quick win, that worked a treat. 4gb free now which is a bit more comfortable :)

edit:

just used the vssadmin command to set the shadowstorage size to 300mb and also used the vsp1cln command and have now got over 6GB free space :)

thanks again!

What about the hibernation file, unless you use that feature. If you untick that where ever it is in Vista I can't remember, under power options no doubt, won't that give you back some space?

Drivestore files take up a fair amount of useless space on vista, millions of drivers you'll never use and can get on the net anyway. Also if you really need space put your pagefile on the other partition?

Change your shadowstorage size. The command is something like

vssadmin shadowstorage on:C for:C maxsize:xMB

In short, vistas system restore allocates soemthing daft like 10% of your HDD to itself, which can potentially be a good 30GB, lower it to 1 or 2GB and your laughing.
