Yeah you are valid on the "star" and the lighting being very different. I guess i can mask that by saying theres another star (twin star system perhaps) to the right thats behind the camera point lol but i do know what you mean and i didnt really think about it. But good to tweak later or in another attept.
About lens flares. Yeah i hate using em but intially i wanted to do the whole sun behind planet becomes visable then bam the light flare kinda thing. Tho i didnt concentrate on the actuals of it.
The planets are rather large i agree and i did only plan to have the gas giant in but then added a earth like planet but i think the clouds (pattern fill) was a bit strong so covered the actual land and see, my bad on that part. I had trouble thinking of the size to use for it as well the planet and placement too so i just found the most visually pleaseing spot for me to use and put it there.
I Went for a grainy 80s film kinda look to the image hence the grainy gas giant. I thought it would give it character.
The blur on the ring was to hide the pixel lookin of it and perhaps make it look like it had depth or somit i guess.

Ok had a go at tweaking the image, the lens flare turned out to be a major contribution to the nebula so was tricky getting it as it was without the flare. I've croped it so it doesnt look really empty with just two objects in as when scaled back the planets it really opened the space but then the planets didnt look like they belonged there (this was when i had a large nebula on tho i duno if it would have worked with the final test nebula for this pic. (see below) I made the earth type planet smaller and hopefully in a nice spot which i think compliments the rings somewhat. Added a slight motion blur to the gas giant to reduce grain as i dont have a save where it had blended options still on that looked as good as how i have it, hence the dark side remained etc. I tweaked the clouds on the planet so you should see the land mass and oceans now.
