Space sim with a story ^^

Freespace 2 is terrific; excellent well presented storyline, intuitive controls and fabulous combat. Not as open-ended as some other space sims, but for those wanting a story-based game that's not necessarily a bad thing. It also has a very strong modding community so it doesn't feel like a 1999 game at all when fully upgraded.

Freespace 2 / Freelancer were really the pinacle of space combat. I can't think of any games better than them. Storyline, graphics and gameplay are still top notch now.

X3 was more like a simulator than an action game. Took ages to get into and the game it was trying to be like (Elite) was so much better. It's just to damn slow. If a game doesn't grip me within 30 minutes (by either a great storyline or gameplay) then I can't be bothered to persue it.

Freelancer was AWESOME! I wish they make Freelancer 2. I even signed a online petition. lol. Yeah great story and game play that game. Go play it. The graphics still look good today. I recommend turning up AA and AF all the way up, looks so much nicer :)

You can buy it for a few quid online brand new wrapped :)

Blimey blast from the past! Just gone searching thru an old box of games.
Got: Conflict Freespace & Freespace 2, loved playing those, didnt finish either tho :(

Found StarLancer too, that was great for a good space blaster :)

I missed out on Homeworld 1 & 2, but did get Cataclysm, didnt finish that either..:( Love these type of games, but they do seem to get quite hard!

My last space game was Nexus Jupiter Incident, really visually good game, and was great spending an hour in a space battle hammering down the aliens battleships etc, while trying to manage your own shields, repair and group tactics..

Just downloading Space force demo now, be good to try something new.

OT: Found SHOGO too, loved that game (1998, man I'm old)

Another one you could look out for is Tachyon: The Fringe. Not as complicated as many space sims and perhaps a little too easy, but an enjoyable story with two separate paths and endings.

freelancer is just bloody terrific. the multiplayer is damn addictive also, there are a lot of mods for it now , the void being my fav.

ahh Nexus Jupiter Incident is an amazing game i found, had a good story to it.

But Freelancer and Starlancer were just both amazing for me. Freespace 2 can be had for free now if i remember correctly.

X3 is also amazing but as other said its really only good if you have the time for it.

Technically speaking while the Freespace 2 engine is now open source, you shouldn't really be able to just download the full game because all the content (textures, models, sounds, levels etc) is probably still under copyright.

In theory you could play the game using SCP and a whole truckload of user created content, but then it wouldn't really be the same game from a storyline perspective.

That said, I know plenty of people have downloaded the isos and I've never heard of anyone getting into hot water over it.

Nope, the content has also been allowed for use unless I'm mistaken.

I'm tempted to install Freespace2 again, does anyone know if this will work without any tweaks, and with my 360 controller? Oh may need widescreen support too. Chucked my joystick ages agooo..

I played on jolt and had a blast back in the day. Then I lost my multiplayer key thingy :(
Stupid MS for not working on the multiplayer code...the game would have been even more awesome online.

I'm gonna install Freespace 2 later today. Really miss playing space sims.
I loved Homeworld 1 and 2. I'll also give a vote for Freelancer.

I quite enjoyed Tachyon, good game, plus it has Bruce Campbell in it :)
