Space Strategy/RTS games?

Really enjoying SoaSE demo at the moment. a lot to take in, but it seems like a good mix of the strategy.

Two points though - firstly its difficult to know what to use against what ships. Some are abvious (fighters against bombers, bombers against capital ships, etc) but others like LRM frigates? There strengths and weaknesses aren't entirely obvious.

The AI never fight each other. I jumped into a system early on, to be presented with a two groups of "opposing" AI in the system. They weren't fighting, but they proceeded to turn all their guns onto me. Stupid. And no, I hadn't set them both in the same team, I kept getting "missions" off them asking me to destroy their opponents.

I was on "Easy" for both, yet 10-15mins in, one of the AI had some big-ass Destroyer that whopped anything I threw at it. He just sat in one system, kicking my ass as I tried to warp in.

Other than that, its good fun.

Sins of a Solar Empire. Yes, it is awesome.

Very Very True.
I have not been able to stop playing it since i got it!
Time pass's fast when you play it. So keep an eye on the clock if you gotta something to do after you start playing it :p

I found it a bit like that at first.. But after a few games I was getting ahead of the AI on tech and so on.. You will probably find it easier each game you play :)

Bear in mind if you build a capital ship yard at the start of the game you can get your first capital ship for free :)

Get that onto killing some pirates for levelling up and it becomes very powerful..

Edit: Galciv2 is more like moo2 yeah (shame moo3 was awful :() and also a very good game indeed. Sins is more like a complicated rts you see :)

Got sins earlier, amazing how quickly a hour goes past when playing. I've decided to learn as I play, always lose lots but for some reason enjoy it more!

Unable to beat the first guy yet but had some good battles and haven't been humiliated yet.. :) Great game, not sure if I prefer this or GalcivII yet.

Found sins quite poor my self :(

Lack of a story mode as also a big let down.

Just seemed like it was rushed.

I still play Master of Orion II :o

Is Sins in a similar vein/as good/better than MOO2?

I remember playing hotseat multiplayer games of Master of Orion 2 all weekend with a few friends, was awesomeness personified :D

Sins of a Solar Empire is an amazing game, deffo worth looking into if you want a new rts game :)

Gal Civ 2 is only 'ok' imho. Maybe I tired of it a little quickly as I'd been playing Moo2 heavily just before delving into it. Less micro than Moo2. Micro in Moo2 upset me. Moo1 is still the best space 4x I've come across, though I've not tried this new Sins yet.

I was quite pleased with Civ4, though. A remake of Colonization is out soon too :)

Supreme Commander/Forged Alliance - absolutely epic. Tried Sins and found it to be the most boring experience of my life :(

Must admit I never play storylines in these games, they're boring after a while. I don't really miss it at all!

RTS games generally lack "brilliant" AI so sp campaigns let devs set up set pieces etc, that the AI can't.

Star Wars: Empire at War is real good, though it's space battles are played 2D style rather than the 3D style you might be used to with the HW games.
