Spam being sent from genuine email addresses

We have an issue where 2 of our users are receiving spam which is addressed from themselves. That is, for example, 'user a' receives spam which has 'user a' in the from field. I've done a spyware and antivirus scan, both have come up clean. I've come across the normal issue, where spam seems to originate from some random email address, but i've never come across it where it appears to come from a genuine user. Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

If you look in the mail headers can you see if the Spam is originating on one of your mail servers? I suspect it is not. It is likely originating from a spam engine somewhere else.

Do you run any active anti-spam software that uses a dynamic black list?

I had this on my machine with Outlook. The problem seems to be a bug in Outlook regarding read receipts being automatically generated. There is quite a bit of info available via Google.

"A lot of incoming spam these days uses a very clever technique of requesting a read receipt, but with the sender of the spam actually being the intended recipient, so if you were to respond to the read receipt, you would end up sending spam to someone. Usually this is not a problem, but due to a feature in Outlook (Microsoft has confirmed this is a feature and they will not fix it), Outlook ignores your 'do not respond to read receipt' setting, and sends a 'Not Read' receipt automatically to any emails that have a read receipt request header... and if you're using IMAP, your gmail 'spam' folder is available, and scanned by outlook. Voila, you become a spambot."
