Spanned drives and large files

I've spanned a 256gb and a 180gb add together. When I copy single files onto this span which are bigger than the smaller drive it stops and says the drive is out of space.
I assumed it would auto magically span across both drives. Before anyone says I don't care about the risk of data loss from a drive failing whilst using span. The files are there just whilst uncompress large files.

Is this a span limitation? Setup issue? Is there another way of doing this perhaps with raid?

Thanks.
Stripped seems to give me just the size of one drive. Presumably because it's replicated across both. Do you know of a guide to do what you've suggested please?

Sounds like you might have selected raid 1 which is mirrored disks. I think most motherboards these days have onboard raid controller with support for raid 0 and raid 1.

Have a Google for your motherboard manual and see if there's anything in there about configuring the raid controller.

I would look at using windows storage spaces, it's a better solution than motherboard raid setups imo for what you are trying to do.
Thanks, that's done the trick.

Had to briefly disable then re-enable the drives to get it to work when creating the space. Some type of caching issue perhaps.
