My son's PC has sparodic booting problems. The symptoms are this

(i) Sometimes won't start - just black screen. Don't get the single bleep to say that all is starting up okay. Sometimes just rebooting one or more times will solve. Sometimes need to switch PSU off and try again. On rare occasions reset the CMOS is needed.

(ii) Stops at initial BIOS boot screen and says CPU setting is incorrect. Hitting F1 to continue works fine.

MoBo is abit IP35

PSU - will need to look up.

It's running a 4890 at the moment but I don't think it is lack of power as the problem has been present with much lesser graphics cards.

I don't have spares to troubleshoot - thinking it's the MoBo but before I rush off and buy a replacment, thought I'd ask here.

Cheers,

Nigel

Sounds like the bios battery to me. Can cause a corrupted CMOS which is why it's failing to boot or claiming the CPU settings are incorrect. How old is the PC?

Good thing is a new battery is only a few quid and is relatively easy to replace, if that's the problem.

My old Asus P4 board was doin this before I realised that the pressure from the cpu cooler had forced the CPU clip out of its solder points.

That was an expensive day

Many thanks. Don't believe it is the battery but I will replace it for the sake of a couple of quid.

Will also reseat the CPU and see how it goes before replacing anything.

Many thanks,

Nigel
