...is now half price for the next 3 days!

Sparrow has announced via Twitter that it's holding a 3-day sale of its OS X email app, reducing the price from $9.99 to $4.99. Sparrow makes managing multiple email accounts easy, offering a unified inbox, quick replies, Dropbox integration for attachments, and full Gmail label support. You can grab it at the discounted price from the Mac App Store until Monday.

..

I prefer it over the default mail client for Mac, but each to their own.

Definitely recommend getting it whilst its half price, download link below.

What are the benefits over the default mail application?

Sparrow is a minimal e-mail application designed to keep things simple and efficient.
No gimmicks here... just your mail and nothing else.

Sounds like the default mail app!

The main benefit imo is using it with Gmail as you get access and full control of all your labels. Flags just don't cut it in mail app.

None for me (I'm not a Gmail user) but I do like it and use it. I only use it though to separate completely my work and home email.

I would not, for example, want to use my work email with sparrow and my home email with Mail - because sparrow wouldn't be up to what I use my work email for, as nice as it is.

There's a few bits I miss mostly with attaching images and other files that Mail handles better. Mail is the best email app I've ever used personally.

Very clever marketing move for Sparrow to encourage people to buy the app before people see the improvements to the default Mail app in Mountain Lion

Sparrow has been acquired by Google - More info here http://sprw.me/

We will continue to make available our existing products, and we will provide support and critical updates to our users. However, as we’ll be busy with new projects at Google, we do not plan to release new features for the Sparrow apps.

Not exactly happy having just bought Sparrow (albeit on sale so at a far lower price) for both my iPhone and Mac in the last month. Will continue to use it as Mail on both platforms is pretty poor for Gmail in my eyes, but I don't have advanced requirements. As for the critical updates...yeah, sure  I do feel cheated.

It is a bit of a shame at current, but will be a great move provided that we see results, both on the iOS side as well as the Android and desktop platforms, in the form of a universal client - a successor to Sparrow.

Decided to change my mind and get a refund for the app, seeing as I could as it was within the seven day period where I could get a refund for the Mac version under DSR. They refunded the iPhone version too! A nice change, considering the frankly disgusting service that I have been receiving recently (though they're gradually making up for it now). So for now, stuck with using Mail on the iPhone, and the online interface on my Mac...the phone checks, so it's not a huge deal.

EDIT: Okay, no Mail, going to try the Gmail app again.

Gutted about this as I use Sparrow on the desktop and had finally found a Mac mail client that was decent.

Hoped they would continue with the odd feature update but seems not. Its not in Google's interest to provide a decent native Mac mail client.

They'll no doubt release their own universal Gmail client but it won't be Sparrow and will add loads of features I don't want or use, the beauty of Sparrow is its simplicity, it does exactly what I need it to do, no more, no less.

While I was annoyed about this too, in the long run I don't think it will cause any harm for the succeeding iOS app. The biggest issue that the Gmail app on the iPhone has right now is that it is not as smooth, both in performance as well as the interface, as Sparrow is/was. The purchase of Sparrow will improve the Gmail app (as well as bring push with a great interface to the iPhone).

The Mac client will see new features and probably function like Sparrow does, but will probably be Gmail only (of course). A bit of a shame, but Gmail does function rather differently to the rest of the email providers, so you'd probably be better off with Mail on both platforms anyway.

I find using Gmail with Mac Mail in Lion as the client more than acceptable. I run it with six Gmail accounts and never had any issues with Mac client - far better than the Gmail interface IMO. Will be interesting to see what ML is like come Wednesday. Sparrow will cease to exist in months to come.

A little uneasy about this acquisition. Sparrow for Mac was one of those applications that I really felt was money well spent. It'd be such a shame to see it die. I do hope Google maintain the Sparrow ethos.

Very clever indeed! I'd made the investment and have kept it going, but I'm trying Mail again in ML and getting along with it quite nicely.... it's a pity it's effectively dead in the water now though, as it's brilliant on the iPhone running JB with Sparrow+

Wish them well in the end though and I do hope they manage to produce something better than the abortion that is the official GMail app.
