spdif optical not working ?

just got an aopen xcube, it has an intel 865 mobo with ac97 sound
when i plug into the line in from my freeview box i get sound like i should but when i use the optical from the box there is nothing, checked the box settings and the optical signal is set , on the pc settings under spdif in it says 48khz, when i remove the cable i can see it drop to nothing then put it back in it says 48khz again so the signal is there but no sound comes out, in the volume properties playback and recording spdif is selected and not muted and the volume is turned up :confused:

just had another look at this and the optical out on my freeview box says 5.1 , now is this because we cant receive 5.1 on freeview that it isnt working ? i thought it should send the signal anyway whether it is stereo or 5.1 , the only reason i want to use the spdif is that i will be using the line in as 6 channel sound into my speakers

are you sure the port on the xcube is spdif input and not spdif output? does it have both?

yes its in at the back and out at the front , in playback properties there is only one spdif marked , ive ticked everyting in advanced yet there is still only one and that is an out , the one in recording i presume must be an out but there still should be an in ??? in playback surely ???
