Hi, me and my girlfriend have have bought a house and will be moving in January, it's the first time we'll have moved out, so obviously we're getting stuff given to us from parents etc, and seeing what we can make do with.

My Mam's got an old 1080P LG 42" she's giving us, along with the 5.1 speaker set up it came with.

My Mam never had it set up correctly, so we've no idea if it even works.

At any rate it requires new cables, but what exactly is this cable? (In the spoiler)

All the speakers connect to some DVD player/receiver thing, which I think we're going to have to change and get a Blu-ray receiver for them to work, anyone got any suggestions?

This is a speaker cable with the colour all done for you. On the back of the system and speakers you will see red and black inputs you connect this cable into the correct colours.

They is loads different types of cable from very cheap to really highend, where this cable fits in I have no idea.

That just looks like regular speaker cable.

A bit concerned when you describe that the speakers connect to a DVD player/receiver unit, which you might have to change. It sounds like an all in one DVD based system.

Are you looking to replace the main unit because it's DVD and you're considering Blu-ray, or because there is a problem with it?

These things only come with speakers as a packaage, hence the 'all in one' description. If you're looking at Blu-ray, you'd have to buy a standalone player, if you don't have one already; although, you could probably swap out the DVD player/receiver unit for a Blu-ray one, if you can get a used one.

If the unit has a problem, and that's why you mentioned about having to change it, then again, you'll have to look at similar used units really. An AV receiver will be no use, because these all in one DVD/BD based systems use odd Ohm speakers; usually 3 Ohm, which aren't compatible with the majority of AV receivers, which take 4 Ohm minimum.

If the unit itself has had it, then unless you can find a similar used one, then you might just have to replace the speakers as well.

So, it's literally just ; http://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-cables/cambridge-audio/symphony-100/gale-symphony-100 ?

The cable in the picture has a single metal strip that goes into the speaker and the receiver thing, is it the same principle, as in the strands would just go in to the connection and then you "lock" it in?

I believe it may be an all in one system, it's all LG stuff.

There's nothing wrong with it, I just have Blu-ray's which at the moment I play on my PC via a projector. I've got like 6 Blu-ray players (3 PC ones, Xbox One, PS4, PS3), but none of those will be getting connected to this TV.

So, I need a way of getting these speakers to work with a standalone blu-ray player ultimately, I thought I could just another one of these main units with a Blu-ray player instead of a DVD player, but now I'm assuming I'll have to use this All in one system with a standalone blu-ray player? Which is fine.

I don't think you can hook anything else up to these all-one systems.

Wire - That's just bog standard speaker wire. As long as the speaker wire is 99% OFC copper, it doesn't matter if it cost 99p a meter or 999 quid a meter, it will sound exactly the same. The only difference will be quality of casing and packaging.

Yes, pretty much as you linked, assuming it's the same at both ends.

These all in one DVD based systems often use speaker cables with a specific type of connector, rather than just the bare wire and binding post or spring clip types of connection you'd get on a standard pair of speakers and amplifier. Makes it hard to just replace the speaker cables unless you cut ends off and splice them on to a new cable.

It's likely that not all these all in one systems use those type connectors on the speaker cables though, and it would seem going by what you have said, that the LG system you have doesn't either. That makes it a lot easier to swap the cables if spring clips or binding posts are used on the receiver unit and the speakers.

Assuming that is what they are, then as long as the polarity is the same both ends, then it should be easy to replace the cables. Most cables come with marking on the sheathing of one of the wires, so it's easier to tell which is which. Like the red line on one if the sheaths in the picture you have provided.

Normally spring clips or binding posts are red and black for each channel, so as long as the marked wire is the same at both ends of player/receiver and speaker, then you can't go wrong. If you're not sure about something for whatever reason, whether the connections seem odd and not what I've described, you could always post a picture of them.

As for the Blu-ray player, yes sounds like you'll have to get a stand alone one then. As I said above these all in one DVD/BD based 5.1 systems have a player and receiver combined. Sony, Samsung, LG and whoever else makes them, only sells them as a complete package. For just the main player/receiver unit, you'd have to look at used ones.

Edit: One thing I forgot to ask, which I've just remember after reading the above post; what input is there on the LG system you have?

Above poster is right that some of these all in one systems don't have any inputs. The idea is you used the player that comes with it and that's it. That was the case quite a few years ago, but I think there are more now that come with at least one input, whether it be HDMI or optical.

It's got a HDMI and optical.

It's literally about 7 years old.

I'm pretty sure it used to work with the Sky box.
And yeah, the cables are the same both ends for connectors, just spring clips.

I believe it's the LG HT752TH.

bluray to tv, then optical to the all in one from the tv, it'll then play sound through the all in one from tv and br.

you wont get full 5.1 surround, but it will do until you save up for a proper avr and speakers
