Speaker distances

Somewhat related to my other thread I am redoing my overall system and wondering about speaker placement. Currently I use the Logitech Z5500 and run it through a Creative Soundblaster Z.

At the moment the speakers are positioned roughly equal surround points, then I take measurements to put into the SB Z control panel so it is meant to make adjustments for distances. My main concerns though are that the room is quite long and we tend to use it across the width rather than down the length. The tv sits on one side wall and the sofa on the other side wall. If I were to alter the speakers so the front & rear left were around twice the distance to the right will the SB Z compensate if I give it the distances?

Anyone had any experience of sound cards that offer this function and does it actually work as intended?

I assume it alters the volume level of each speaker depending on the distance but you can manually tweak them as well
