speaker hissing

one of my pc speakers has just started making a loud hissing noise.It is only a 2.1 speaker setup and the other one is working fine.I can just about hear audio over the hissing noise if i play a cd etc.
Anyone any ideas ?

Narrowed it down to my creative x-fi soundcard put an old souncard in that i found, and all is fine.
