My drivers side speaker in my mk2 mondeo is flapping a little so am looking to replace both front speakers.

I have a Blaupunkt MP3 HU which only pumps out 25w/channel. Some of the speakers I have seen have a "nominal input" of about 35w. Does this mean my HU would struggle to drive them?

The oem fords are 5x7's but have seen adapters to run 17cm coax's. Would there be much benefit in sound quality in running the slightly larger speakers?

Thanks

Yes it will struggle to give enough to your speakers with it only giving out 25W.

Going to 17cm without getting an amp in your case would be a bad idea, most 17cm ones require more watts then smaller ones. IF you are going to amp it then go to 17cm for sure.

RUBBISH.You dont need an amp to run front speakers. They will run happily off a head unit.

Get yourself a set of 6x9's. They fit straight into the fron doors of a mondeo and sound fantastic.

Your HU will drive your standard speakers fine.

If you get different speakers it would be best to amp them.

I would get the 17cm coax personally. Better quality that 6x9 in the fronts.

Haha, some decent 17cm comps would destroy 6x9's in the front.

No you don't need to amp them, but it would be crazy to run them without an amp especially when it's stuck to only 25W per channel.

MrCake,

Just to let you know the stock Ford ones are rated at 25W so they are perfectly fine with your HU.

6x9's will end up destroying the doors. Shake them to bits and as there is very little air in the door they sound ****.

Ah the 6x9, generic recommendation by people who have no idea on a good system.

Yes 17cm components are the way forward as Dan said, they can be powered off your HU but will sound miles better with an amp.

im wondering, the only reason you people are knocking 6x9's is because boy racers recommend that everybody should have a set on the back shelf. what makes them so much worse than 17cm's in the front doors? budget concidered, it might actually be the better choice....

also one other thing, components =! coax's. Make sure you lot are talking about and recommending the same thing before slamming 6x9's.

Sound staging would be the first point to make, not sure how low down the mondeo speakers are, also the cones on 6x9's are quite big so you might hit exactly the same amping / HU clipping problem if you get a 'Alright' set.

Eh, you saying components are worse than coax or components are coax or components are the same as 6x9's?

coax speakers have the tweeter in the same place as a 6x9 would. what difference does that make to the soundstage?

Im saying they are not the same. components will have a seperate tweeter, coax speakers have the tweeter built in to the one unit positioned above the bass/mid cone, like 6x9's do.

Both me and Dan reccomended Components, so your point is?

not all of you did. jesus man think about your replies. If you want to turn this in to a sarcastic 'so whats your point' argument go ahead, i'll leave right now so you lot can give him conflicting advice.

Yes i do fully well know i recommended comps. :) I also know how easy it is to fit a comp system to a mk2 Mondeo like the Mk1 Focus. The whole system can be kept within your door, really is easy.

Firestar_3x, As you can see in the below pic they are not too low, but can you see the black triangle part to the right of the mirror. Well you can fit the tweeter on there which is nice and high and helps out the sound so much with the tweeter up there.

Not in the slightest, if your going to get touchy i think you should leave, the one person who said coax aint posted back and you've only replied to me so......

Looks quite high up, depends how much work the OP wants to do i suppose, do you need to remove the door card or can you take out the speaker grill, for ease of fitment perhaps 17cm coax are the way forward instead?

You have to take the whole door interior off anyways for fitment of a speaker. Its really easy to do that though, I could get my door interior off within a few minutes. For easy though coax would be less work but in my opinion the extra work is 100% worth it.

Because 6*9s are oval they wont sound as good as some normal 17cm round coaxials. Unless you get an expensive pair like some JL audio 6*9s but then they would need amping as the HU amp couldn't cope with them. :) Go for some Infinity 17cm coaxials they should be quite happy running of the HU aslong as you dont have the volume up high all the time. :)
