Hi,

I'm looking to improve my speakers on my new pc. at the moment I've got some old harmen / kardon stereo speakers from an old dell pc and quite frankly they dont do the job.

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6 Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard onboard audio. whats the best I can expect using just that and also whats a good speaker / sound card combo should i decide to upgrade the sound spec as well.
:D

EDIT : the onboard audio is Audio Realtek ALC889A codec High Definition Audio 2/4/5.1/7.1-channel

I was planning on getting something like the Logitech Z-5500 THX Certified 5.1 Speaker System (970115-0120) as sold by OC. is it ok just to plug into my mobo or would an additional sound card be preferrable? Thats really what I'm asking.

An additional sound card would be preferrable, but they will still sound very good on normal onboard sound.

I think the Z5500's have a digital input, so if you are using that an external soundcard will make absolutely no difference to sound quality.
