this is something I have been thinking of for a while now but just haven't got around to doing. im looking to upgrade my speakers , I want to use the towers I have now and replace the speakers with some better ones.

the speakers where bought off ebay and I like the quality of the sound I get through them but I want it to be better.

is it possible to use something like car audio speakers in the set up? I have had 1 of the speakers out of its placement and they are all connected by wire with solder.

the towers have 2 bass/2 mid and 1 high speaker with a small tweeter at the top(not touching that). and im not sure what the other group is made up of but I could check on the ebay listing for that.

all help welcome (Y)

Those enclosures will have been specifically designed/optimised for the speakers that are currently in them, so replacing them is unlikely to make them sound any better. It's definitely possible to replace them with car audio speakers but its probably best to buy a new set if you're after sound quality improvements.

Although, you could also just try it and see what happens :p

This is very true, and a very real issue. Could actually result in dire performance.

I would be looking on avforums and places such as those and grabbing some decent second hand towers/floorstanders.

More of a concern is how well made are the cabinets?

They look like Skytronic to me, which means cheap. Cheap with so many woofers means less quality, which in turn means the cabinets are not going to be that solid. Good sounding floorstanders need solid well made cabinets, which costs money and is partly why cheap ones sound poor.

You'll be throwing money down the drain by trying to replace the woofers for better ones if the cabinets are not up to the job. Better to buy proper well made speakers from good manufacturers. Wharfedale, Tannoy and Mission all make great budget end speakers. There are probably quite a few older speakers to be had second hand for good prices, although it might be harder to match the centre to the left and right fronts. That is crucial really for good 5.1 set up. A centre that doesn't match can make a potential good 5.1 set up, not so good.
