Speakers crashing in OSX

I recently bought some Teufel Concept B 200's and they are fantastic speakers. However, occassionally they crash in OSX and it only seems to be when After Effects CS3 is open. Basically, they 'disappear' from the Sound Preferences options and a Restart is needed. This can occur when I close AE as an example.

They're USB speakers with a mini amp (as pictured above) that are also connected to a PS3 via Red n' Whites. I'm pretty certain the speakers aren't faulty and they seem fine when using Itunes & Final Cut, just the problems can occur when AE is open.

Is it possible AE is the fault? Or is there a software update for OSX that may prevent this? Maybe buying Snow Leopard? (I own a 2008 Mac Pro). Or would disabling the Mac Pro's on-board audio stop this as that's not being used anymore (and how does one do this?)

To be fair, I've just been using them for about three hours straight in OSX and there wasn't a problem but I'm just wondering what to do if it occurs again. They also work fine with the PS3, no problems as yet so I'm definitely sure it has something to do with OSX.
