Im looking for some very good speakers, sort of thinking of the z5500's, just a few questions though.

is a high end sound card needed? (I have a DS3 with optical and coaxial out on the built in sound card

the fuses are abit tempremental according to some reviews? hows ** take on it? how many does it get through?

I would seriously recommend a dedicated sound card. Recently upgraded to a x-fi gamer edition, and I have to say, the improvement of sound quality was very impressive, even on my cheap £40 5.1 surround speakers :D

If you want "very good speakers" consider seperates. I have a 5.1 gaming rig

B&W 601 left/right
B&W CC6 centre
Arcam Alpha 9 for the 601's
Yamaha DSP-A592 for centre & rears
SVS PC Ultra 13 for the subwoofer

All of the kit is what I already had, or given free. Arcam 9 cost me £100, and that's the only recent purchase on the PC audio upgrade (plus the X-Fi) since changing over from Creative FPS-2000 speakers.

what was the upgrade from mate? just wondering tbh, cause the manual says its like 96khz24bit and all that rubbish, just wondering, with it being digital too if it was worth shelling out, thought that with the comp being digital that the signal would be the same between any sound card... cause dont the speakers do all the decoding work?

if he is going for good quality, i advise he gets the bowers & wilkins 686, insanely good quality (what can you expect from b&w) and very nice design, and if you're on a good budget, go for a rotel amp, that would need to be complimented by a stereo to phono jack though, can be found easily, just google it.

Adam.

As i say time and time again arrange for some demos of speakers.

Have a listen to the Monitor Audio BR2 or the B2. Ive got the B2 speakers and they are pretty good, mate well with an arcam amp, but i am biased ;) Also try out some of the older B&W 601, 602, 603 speakers. there really is a huge choice out there, but there is definately more value for money in the second hand market.

You will get much more sound for your precious pennies , plus 2nd hand speakers will be run in and sounding sweet from the moment you get them, no waiting needed for burn in.

jesus guys I think he just wanted a pc 5.1 setup not a complete cinema quality seperates set up :p
