hello all,

Picked up a DENNON AVR1707 on the cheap off a mate last week, but no speakers, however with Xmas looming my funds are kinda short.

So im looking for a speaker package for about £150, kida a low budget but thats all i got for the time being.

Look for left & right speakers, for that price. Don't get a 5.1 speaker set for that, it'll be rubbish. Some small bookshelf speakers will do.

Bah,

Was afraid people might say that. Speaker sets cant be that bad?

Mabye if i saved up another £100-150 or so i could get the Kef KHT1005s?

Kef KHT1005s, waste of money. If you do want to buy small satellite speakers be aware of there limitations, and look at the Kef Eggs, at the very least. And look at another make of subwoofers, I wouldn't buy Kef subs.

I own Kef speakers btw.

OK

Had a think about it for now and i only have about £200 at a
maximum and probably wont be able to afford anymore in the
future as i've had a rarther nasty bill come through  , sod Xmas.

So can anybody reccommend me a 5.1 system which will give me the best bargin for my buck!

head for the bay and pick it up in bots and pieces should be able to do ok, get a pair of bookshelf speakers for the oldish fronts (wharfdale 7.1 or kef C series £25-£30 or maybe some mordant short 901's £50-£60) this should limit the effect of not being able to afford a sub, Wharfdale modus cubes make excellent rears (£20 a pair) then blow the rest on a centre, try and get the front three from the smae brand for a more integrated sound. The purests will all scoff at me for this suggestion but I had a system similar to this for years when I was a student and it sounded more than adequate.

For that money i would buy 2nd hand to be honest.
Maybe get a set of stereo's and a sub depending on what front pair you manage to get.
I got 2x MS302 (compact bookshelf), 1x MS304 (centre) and an MS308 (sub) for £150 inc. delivery second hand.
They sound great with movies and music all paired up to my CA Azur 540R.

I probably could have avoided the sub and got a better set of fronts but i like the really compact size and to be honest, for movies i love having the sub. Music wise i kinda wish the speakers could handle lower frequencies on their own or at least have bigger bookshelf's that could go down a bit lower so the sub only handles the really low end.

Oh and as said.

If you can't afford more than £200 the really think about getting a setup like mine with decent fronts and a sub (and maybe a centre) and then adding the surrounds when you can afford to. You will be far more pleased with the sound quality and won't miss the 5.1 for a few months.
You could get some really decent bookshelf fronts s/h for £120 and a sub for £80 or so (ignoring the centre).

Look out for:
Mission, Mordaunt Short, B&W....

I agree but like I said previously I think the surrounds/centre are more important than the sub to the experience, if you get a good pari of fronts they will produce enough low end for most normal sized living rooms. Yes you'll losse a small section of the bottom end and that rattle your seat feeling that only a sub can provide but I think the rears and centre can offer you far more. Particularly the centre as dialogue just becomes infinately better even with a cheap(ish) speaker.

TY guys had a demo today comparing the packages to set systems and i could really tell the diffrence, so will probably go with some secondhand stuff and build up my system over the year :D

Sub/sat sets are great if that all you can get away with (ie the misses won't let you have six big speakers in the lounge) but other than that proper full range speakers are just different class. I've yet to hear a sub/sat system that truly hides the point were the base drops out of the sats to the sub. Having said that some of the latest Sub/Sat packages are pretty impressive the AS Aego T5's for exmple are stunning (allthough at £600 way over your budget) and will probably find a home in my lounge when we decorate next year just to keep things looking a little less clutered.
