I'm building a gaming computer for a friend who has a budget of £500 to cover:

  • CPU, Motherboard, Ram (willing to take a bundle if viable)
  • CPU cooler (considering the H50-1 as I use one and it's brilliant for both noise and cooling but might be too expensive for this build)
  • Graphics card (needs to be decent, thinking like 460gtx 768mb but that might also blow the budget)
  • PSU (some cheap reliable modular one)
  • Optical drive (some basic reliable DVD-RW would do)
  • Hard drive - Going with the Samsung F3 1tb @ £46.99
  • Case - Going with the Antec 300 @ £46.99

If well worth it I'll suggest he extends his budget to £600.

In addition he also wants a decent sized monitor so I was going to suggest this 23":
» Samsung P2370 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black

Advice is much appreciated!

anything decent is overbudget.

if you just use the stock AMD heatsink until funds allow for a performance cooler, then its under £600.

Thanks, here's the basket without the cooler, I'll suggest he adds that later or only if he can budget for it:

Any other suggestions or advice?

does he mind buying it second hand?

Depends, do you mean the whole system or certain parts?

Only chipset 700 so no SATA 3.0/USB 3.0 capability but room for crossfire if needed in the future.

This is just around the budget with no delivery charge, but I would recommend going for the 460 if he's buying that monitor.

Edit: Your build should be better, just if graphics were going to be updated a whole new card would have to be bought.

so you think that motherboard does crossfire?

With the Corsair H50 I would reccomend a push pull configuration, a second fan drops up to 10c off. I would also replace the original fan and use the apache fans making sure the motherboard has PMW cpu fan mangement or you may find the fan wont start till the temperture is higher due to the PMW on the fan and the motherboard conflicting voltage regulator I found this fixed this when i updated the bios and it added PMW control for cpu :)

Also I would have gone for say a HD5770 cheaper and better spec

Would i be wrong in saying you could save money on the ram as the chip wont do 1600Mhz anyway. the highest you will get is 1333mhz unless you want to fiddle around overclocking; I would reccomend saving at least £25+

woops the 5830 sorry. similar price range and maybe not ocz gold but the 1600Mhz is not needed surely?
