Hi

Looking to build a pc for work and just need some quick help with the spec.

Thinking something along the lines of:
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £139.99(£160.99)
  • Abit IP35 Pro XE Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £82.99(£95.44)
  • Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU £62.99(£72.44)
  • Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black (No PSU) £45.99(£52.89)
  • Pioneer DVR-216DBK 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99(£19.54)
Sub Total : £348.95
Shipping : £10.99
VAT : £53.99
Total : £413.93

Parts needed:
  • Memory - 4GB
  • Basic graphics card
  • Is the PSU overkill?

Budget again, is £500 inc vat.

PC will mainly be used for desktop publishing, graphic design mainly using CorelDRAW, sometimes large files.
Also note I already have a few hdd's lying around, all that will be required in terms of storage is operating system and applications.

Any advice on alternative parts(?) etc will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

abit no longer make MBs so drop the ip35proxe

p43 or p45 chipset is a better choice

ati 3450 for a low powered graphics card

or 4670 for if you want to occasionally play games

seasonic silverpower 400W should run that system

OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Platinum Series DDR2 (OCZ2P10664GK)

do you need a Hard disk as well?

Thanks for your input guys.

How's this looking?

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £139.99 (£160.99)

  • Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail (471846200-9689) £58.99(£67.84)

Took out the optical as I found one lying around lol.

Anything else I can swap to get more performance?
Is the case okay? did I pick the right gpu? I won't be gaming at all, as I said this is for work so purely graphic design etc.

Thanks again.

looks like a solid build to me. Personally I would've stuck with the corsair, but it will push you over budget. Apart from that I see no problem.
For your budget, I think that package will see you well. You would struggle to get more performance from anything else :)

Is the Corsair really worth the extra £22+vat?

Also just realised the Seasonic Silverpower 400W PSU is out of stock!
May get this from elsewhere unless you can recommend another PSU?

Thanks a lot, I will order this tomorrow and report back once built and running!

if you got major upgrade plans, the corsair is worth the extra £22, if not stick with the sliverpower 400 or alternatives

corsair VX450

sliverpower 500

Ok thanks.

This is what I have so far:

It's £40+vat over the budget, is there anything I could change to bring the price down without losing too much performance/quality? Cheaper motherboard and graphics card maybe?
